Devious Journal Entry

Wed Jan 28, 2009, 1:52 PM
Background
Traced bases are unoriginal and illegal without the original creator's permission, so why do so many people do it?

"Dolling started from tracing!" - Unfortunately, that is true. There's no reason to hide that fact. BUT, dolling has evolved and grown up from it's not-so-humble beginnings. That little fact does not give anyone the right to continue tracing without permission.

"I found it on Google/Photobucket so it must be free ware." - Sorry but nothing on the internet is free unless it explicitly says so, meaning all screen shots, wallpapers, anime, vector, pictures, photos... EVERYTHING is owned by someone else has a copyright whether it's visible or not. You don't need a watermark, signature or document to hold copyright over your own original artwork. Legal documents are usually there for legal purposes to reinstate that the person owns the creation if they needed to go to court about the issue.

"I don't know how to contact them so I'll do it anyways." - What kind of excuse it that?! You must ALWAYS get permission BEFORE you start! And if you can't find out how to contact them, then don't even start or think about it. Plain and simple.

"They won't know. I'm just a small artist." - It doesn't matter how unknown you are, you're infringing on the artist's rights. The internet is very vast so even if the original creator doesn't know, everyone else will and see that you are a thief.

"They're a big company, they won't be losing anything." - It doesn't matter if they're from a popular anime, TV show, movie or anything, it still doesn't give you the right to steal and trace over.

"They should be thankful, I'm promoting their artwork!" - Anyone who thinks of this as an excuse should be slapped until they come to their senses. It's not promoting their work at all and is more so hurting it.

"I gave credit." - Linking back to a Photobucketed image or even the original image is NOT crediting. And even more, linking back does not give you the right to trace/steal!

"I don't know where this came from." - Don't know the source? Don't use it!!! Can that be any simpler?

"But I can't draw!" - Then practice! Tracing may help you a little but it does not substitute for real practice. Look at stock images for referencing on how to draw certain things and then do it yourself from a blank image. The only way any artist has ever gotten very good and renown at drawing is from original practice. It is also the only way you will ever develop your own unique artistic style. Tracing merely copies the original artist's style which is unhealthy for your drawing 'career'. If you DO trace for practice though, then keep them in Scraps where they belong or don't post them at all!

"It's just a hobby/practice." - Then keep them in Scraps.

"We're not doing anything wrong!" - Yes, you are. Read above.

"It's not just one person tracing, there's a whole community!" - There's a whole community doing illegal drugs but does that make them legal too? No, it doesn't.

"It was requested!" - That doesn't make it any more right. You should refuse the request and explain to them why it was refused in the first place.

"How was I supposed to know, it was from Photobucket/Google!" - Then tell them to find the original and official site for the artwork. That way you won't have to worry if the art originally came from a dA artist or someone who opposes any manipulations of their artworks. Be a bit tough, it's not going to hurt them.

"Tl;Dr" - Grow up. Stop being a lazy, immature child or adult who refuses to act like one and face the truth. Sure you don't like it but tough, that's life.

"It's not in your gallery, it's none of your business." - This isn't a territorial war and it's technically not your space either, it's dA's. Even if you have a subscription, the ones that own the servers are the dA owners.

"You're being an immature douche bag!" - Oh, right, I'm immature. (Gawd I laughed at that one!)

About
This account consists of deviants and deviations who support the removal of all impermissibly traced bases from DeviantArt. (Meaning stolen and traced over artwork without the original artist's permission.)
It is also to teach those who do trace that it is very wrong and is discouraged by all.

Bases traced off of an image with permission from the original creator are legally perfect examples of what trace-basemakers should do. Those who have tutorials promoting illegal tracing for basemaking will have their tutorials faved in the "What NOT To Do" collection. Those who feel that they have 'changed their ways' about tracing should delete their tutorials from their dA account and promote original basemaking in their stead. The original tutorials will then be faved in the "What TO Do" collection.

I NEVER said that the screenshot was mine so there really is no point in making yourself seem like you're trying to fight someone when it really won't work. As long as the internet around, people ARE going to use and make bases. Besides, I made this for a friend of mine so excuse me for being generous to them. You're going to get a lot of negative feedback because you're as bad a troll who puts good artwork into a "HAHAHA! THIS IS CRAP WORK!" collection. Don't be a ass like they are and forget the idea

"Victory! Whoever reported a recent illegal-tracing tutorial that was deleted by dA staff deserves our applause! One down, many to go."

By the way, if the above quote is referring to my recently removed tutorial, please delete it. It's really kind of a salty ass wound.

If not, disregard this message.

And no matter what don't send me a text wall.

I suggest you remove me from your journal and learn how someone is before you judge them so harshly.

Wow people, why argue something that clearly agents the rules? I applaud all the people who are finally trying to help the few mods and admins here deal with the staggering number of traced and stolen art

I agree with everything :iconpockypixels: said. Seriously, none of the "traced base" artists have ever claimed to own the original artwork. It's a non-cash-profit type of fun and art style, nothing more.

It is an art style, there isn't anything on DA that disallows such type of artwork as long as credit is given back. Besides, not all artists just link back to the picture. If they know who it's by, they credit the original artist too. And trace-basing still takes the pixeler's/doller's artistic skills anyway. Not just anyone can be a base maker.

This account is all talk. There's no "original bases" to prove your point. Before you decide to be hypocritical about what someone else is doing, why do you try to "do it right" yourself?

"You see life is like that. We change, that's all. You see, the guy I am now is not the guy I was then. If the guy I was then met the guy I am now he'd beat the shit out of me. Those are the facts."

I'm sorry people are being ignorant about this and your aims. I wish you the best of luck for informing more people on this matter.
Creativity is Originality.

Note to readers; I am on neither side. I choose not to get involved. I have merely demonstrated my opinion. This is all I will be saying. Flaming or attacking me will be pointless & ignored.

If you want to promote original bases you should make an account that promotes original bases. Durr.

This account does no such thing. This account is an ass-load of bull-shit that promotes your concept of right and wrong.

Maybe we'd be less bothered if you took our suggestion of taking the What Not To Do collection down.

Our opinions don't agree with your God complex.
:iconpockypixels:
This account is, technically, a witch hunt, as I called it before.

Weren't there times when people would be lynched and have their bodies left out as a reminder of what could happen to the other townsfolk?

This is no different than that.
:iconpockypixels:
And by "I'd like to" I mean that I'm demanding it.
:iconpockypixels:
If you don't mind I'd like to have my tutorial removed from your persecution collection.
:iconyoukai-dumatra:
Thanks for the :+fav:

I would rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.
:iconostwyn:
True fact is true. Awesome club, glad someone made it =3 My tutorial was actually for a friend who wanted anatomy help, but eh, it works.

Also- some anime artists don't care what fans do to their stuff, which doesn't help the problem. But the traced-image bases are bad, you can never tell, so I don't use them ever. I'd rather not have my ass sued off ^^

I've learned that "the Way, the Truth, the Life" is making Jesus the Road to Heaven, but everyone has a different way of walking on that road. Some walk, some dance, some skip, some hop, some run, but they're all going the same place.
:iconsarahofdarkness:
Um, no offense, but this club is kind of mean. As basemakers we DO give credit and/or sometimes get permission from the original artists. I don't think you should be exploiting users for tracing a pixel base. If they want to do it, let them. Besides, the tutorial you collected from my gallery was a request. I don't think you guys have a right to go and point out what users tracing bases you think is uncool or bad. It's rather rude.
